Visiting Guidelines

Patients & families

Clear visiting information can make hospital visits calmer and safer for patients, families and the care team.

Before you visit

Please contact the relevant Ahana centre before travelling. Visiting arrangements may vary according to the clinical setting, the person’s care plan, infection-control requirements and the needs of other patients.

  • Confirm the visiting time and location.
  • Ask how many visitors may attend.
  • Bring a valid identity document if requested.
  • Tell the team in advance if a child, older person or someone requiring assistance will accompany you.

During your visit

Please maintain a calm, respectful environment. Follow the guidance of nursing and security staff, protect the privacy of every patient and keep noise to a minimum.

  • Do not photograph, film or record patients, staff or clinical areas without formal permission.
  • Do not bring alcohol, tobacco, intoxicating substances, weapons or unsafe objects.
  • Check with staff before bringing food, medicines, gifts or electronic devices.
  • Use respectful language and avoid discussions that may cause distress or conflict.
Items that may be restricted

Restrictions are based on safety and clinical need. Items that may require approval include medicines brought from home, sharp objects, glass containers, cords, lighters, tobacco products, outside food, large bags and some electronic devices. Staff will explain any restriction that applies.

Children and vulnerable visitors

Please ask the care team before bringing children into an inpatient clinical area. The suitability of a visit depends on the child’s age, the patient’s condition and the environment on that day. A responsible adult should supervise children at all times.

When a visit may be delayed or shortened

A visit may be rescheduled, supervised, shortened or paused when a patient needs rest, assessment or urgent treatment; when the visit may interfere with recovery; or when safety, privacy or infection-control requirements make a visit unsuitable.

Urgent situations

If you believe a patient or visitor faces an immediate risk of harm, inform hospital staff immediately. For an emergency outside the hospital, contact local emergency services or visit the nearest emergency department.
