Treatment & Therapy Guides

Treatment information

Mental-health treatment is most effective when it is individualised, collaborative and reviewed over time.

How treatment is planned

Planning begins with assessment: current symptoms, duration, risks, physical health, medicines, substance use, previous response, daily functioning, family context and personal goals. A working diagnosis may change as more information becomes available.

Psychological therapies

Different therapies address different needs. Approaches may include cognitive behavioural, behavioural, interpersonal, supportive, family-based, trauma-informed or skills-focused work. Suitability depends on the problem, age, readiness, risk and treatment goals.

Medication

Medication may be recommended for some conditions or levels of severity. Choice depends on expected benefits, adverse effects, physical health, interactions, pregnancy considerations, previous response and patient preference. Monitoring and follow-up are part of safe prescribing.

Inpatient and intensive care

Hospital-based care may be considered when risk is high, symptoms are severe, basic needs cannot be met, close monitoring is required or outpatient treatment is insufficient. Admission decisions require individual clinical assessment.

Rehabilitation and recovery support

Recovery may include rebuilding daily routines, relationships, self-care, education, employment and community participation. Progress is rarely perfectly linear; relapse-prevention planning and early review of warning signs are important.

Making treatment decisions

Ask what the treatment is intended to address, likely benefits, important risks, alternatives, expected review period and what to do if symptoms worsen. Do not stop prescribed treatment abruptly without professional advice unless emergency care directs otherwise.
