Addiction and recovery
Support for understanding harmful alcohol or drug use, treatment options and the role of families in recovery.
When substance use becomes a concern
Warning signs include difficulty cutting down, craving, increasing tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, repeated use despite harm, neglect of responsibilities, risky behaviour or spending increasing time obtaining, using or recovering from substances.
Assessment
A confidential assessment considers substances used, amount and pattern, withdrawal risk, physical and mental health, medicines, previous treatment, social circumstances, motivation and immediate safety. Some withdrawal states require medically supervised treatment.
Treatment options
Care may include withdrawal management, medicines where appropriate, motivational work, psychological therapy, relapse-prevention planning, family support, peer support and rehabilitation. The plan depends on the substance, severity, health risks and individual goals.
Withdrawal can be dangerous
Do not assume that abruptly stopping heavy or dependent use is safe. Alcohol, sedatives and some other substances can cause serious withdrawal. Seek urgent medical advice for seizures, severe shaking, hallucinations, confusion, high fever, collapse or rapidly worsening agitation.
Supporting recovery
Recovery involves more than abstinence alone. Sleep, physical health, relationships, purpose, work, housing and management of coexisting mental-health conditions may all matter. A lapse should prompt early review rather than shame or abandonment of treatment.
For families
Set clear safety boundaries, avoid providing money or cover for harmful behaviour, and encourage treatment. Do not attempt to physically manage a dangerous withdrawal or violent situation at home.
