Child & Adolescent Mental Health Resources

Children and young people

Age-appropriate information for families concerned about emotions, behaviour, development, learning or safety.

When to consider an assessment

Seek advice when emotional or behavioural changes are persistent, severe, developmentally unusual or interfere with home, school, friendships, sleep or self-care. Concerns may include anxiety, low mood, attention difficulties, school refusal, aggression, developmental differences, eating problems, substance use or self-harm.

Assessment looks at the whole picture

A child or adolescent assessment may include developmental history, physical health, family context, learning, sleep, relationships, school information, medicines and safety. Information may be gathered from the young person and, with appropriate safeguards, parents, caregivers or teachers.

How parents can help
  • Describe specific behaviours and when they occur.
  • Maintain predictable routines and age-appropriate boundaries.
  • Listen without minimising or interrogating.
  • Work with the school when difficulties affect learning or attendance.
  • Store medicines and dangerous items securely.
Talking with a young person

Use calm, non-judgemental language. Explain that mental-healthcare is a way to understand what is happening and find support—not a punishment. Respect growing autonomy while taking safety concerns seriously.

Urgent help

Seek urgent assessment for suicidal intent or planning, recent serious self-harm, severe aggression, marked confusion, suspected abuse, dangerous intoxication, inability to eat or drink, or behaviour creating immediate risk.
